Getting to Honokalani Beach means taking the famous Road to Hana, a 65-mile winding road through rainforest, waterfalls, and ocean views.

But honestly, part of the fun of Honokalani Beach on Maui is driving the Hana Highway yourself. You’re behind the wheel, free to stop whenever you want, and take in every twist, turn, and photo op along the way.

Don’t discount the Pi’ilani Highway which hugs the south coast of the island. You’ll hit a few rough patches on this road (not ideal if you have a rental), but it’s a great way to see a lesser-known side of Maui and maybe find a secluded beach to hang out on.

As of 2021, Waianapanapa State Park, where the black sand beach is located, has a reservation system. Planning ahead isn’t always the most fun part of vacation but this is a must if you want to visit.

These reservations go fast, especially during those midday hours. Book online as early as possible (up to 14 days in advance.) and avoid any disappointment.

Honokalani Beach in Waianapanapa State Park on the east side of Maui is a one-of-a-kind beach. Black sand made from volcanic rock is the signature feature of this beach. The beach is small but its beauty and uniqueness make it a must-see.

You will find many things to do at Honokalani Beach. The clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling to see the marine life. The beach is also known for its sea caves and lava tubes for those who want to venture beyond the shore.

The Honokalani Black Sand Story

There’s a cool geological reason why Honokalani looks like it does. The beach gets its color from basalt – volcanic rock created when lava hits the ocean and cools rapidly.

Years of waves crashing against this lava rock broke it down into tiny black sand grains creating that perfect beach.

Unlike white or yellow sand beaches, black sand beaches don’t get replenished by ocean debris so these are very special. Be sure to remove your shoes and feel the sand between your toes.

Hiking Through History: Trails

Honokalani’s scenery goes way beyond the black sand beach. Lace up your hiking shoes because Waiʻānapanapa State Park has several hiking trails that allow you to explore the island’s history and take in the views.

• Ke Ala Loa O Maui Trail: This 3-mile trail winds through forest and takes you past ancient Hawaii, a heiau (sacred temple site), small lava tubes, sea caves, and historical burial sites. If you love history and views, this is a must-do.
• Waiʻānapanapa Coast Trail North: This 2.1-mile hike is more challenging but the views of the cliffs and waves are incredible.

Whatever trail you choose, remember to be respectful as you walk through these historic areas. Bring plenty of water as it’s easy to get dehydrated in the Hawaiian sun.

Check Out the Lava Tubes

While you’re at the black sand beach don’t miss the opportunity to explore something totally cool. On the right side of the beach, a small volcanic rock opening is the entrance to a lava tube.

The tube is an otherworldly experience and as you walk along the smooth volcanic walls remember you’re walking through what was once a channel of flowing molten lava. Bring a headlamp or flashlight as it gets dark in there.

As one of the best beaches in Maui, Honokalani is all about views and a great trip hiking around or taking photos. However, before you go, there are a few tips to keep in mind so that you stay safe and make the most of it.

Honokalani’s Currents and Shore Break

While it’s tempting to take a dip in the Pacific, you must pay attention to the currents. Honokalani is not your average swimming beach in Maui. The ocean here is known for shore breaks and strong currents so think twice before you jump in.

Honokalani has no reef. This means waves can come out of nowhere with intense force. If you’re not experienced with shore breaks don’t swim at Honokalani.

The water conditions are unpredictable, but worst-case scenario, you can always enjoy the views from the shore.

Sun Essentials

The Hawaiian sun is no joke. Bring and reapply high-quality reef-safe sunscreen throughout the day even if it’s cloudy. Throw in a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and a light long-sleeved shirt for extra sun protection.

Get There Early (or Stay Late)

Like most popular spots Honokalani gets crowded. Going early is more peaceful. You beat the tour buses and get that parking spot. Plus you can get great shots in the soft morning light.

Even better pack a picnic, stay past sunset, and enjoy the view of the Milky Way against the black sand. The stars are very bright on a clear night.
