What to expect

Select the option of pickup at your Oahu hotel or make your way to the Honolulu airport to catch the flight to Maui.

Upon touchdown in Maui, meet your local guide and transfer to your air-conditioned coach. The tour’s first stop is the Haleakala Crater, up a winding road that ascends 9,740 vertical feet in just 37 miles (60 kilometers) to the Haleakala Visitor’s Center. As you drive, peek out the windows at the fantastic views of Maui’s west side and listen to your guide’s commentary about the history and geology of the island. (The mini-coach bus we use is not allowed up to the 10,000-foot point, only vans and cars.)

Disembark to see the volcano’s gigantic crater—2.5 miles (4 km) wide, 7.5 miles (12 km) long and 3,000 feet (915 meters) deep. This dormant volcano last erupted in 1790, but the landscape around the crater is still bare and free of vegetation. Chilly temps at the summit mean you might want a jacket or sweater on hand.

Head down from the barren otherworldliness of Mt. Haleakala to the vibrant jade rainforest of the Iao Valley. At the Iao Needle, an unusual rock formation, you have free time to explore the area’s waterfalls and swimming holes on foot via an easy hiking trail. Stop for lunch (own expense) midday.

Travel through the charming town of Wailuku, where you have time to walk around at your leisure and check out the historic Ka’ahamanu Church. After exploring Maui’s highlights, return to the airport for your flight back to Oahu.

Departure and return

Start:
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, 300 Rodgers Blvd, Honolulu, HI 96819, USA
Please meet at the airport at 5:30 AM for your interisland flight on Hawaiian Airlines and promptly check at the Hawaiian Airlines Ticket Counter or Self-Service Kiosk. Make sure to check in for all flights (round trip) and then proceed to the designated gate for departure.

Kahului Airport, 1 Keolani Pl, Kahului, HI 96732, USA
Upon Arrival At Kahului Airport (OGG), meet up at 7:45 to 8:00 AM with your driver by exiting the baggage claim area, walk east (right) past the ride share p/up area to behind the old rental car facility’s back parking lot. Look for a Polynesian Adventure vehicle, parking stall #2.
